Media in Marketing

In January 2018, Mashable wrote an article titled “5 social media skills you need to get ahead (and where to learn them)”. Mashable believes that social media is an essential in marketing and their are skills that business owners must acquire to become successful. In order to gain social media skills, Mashable recommends readers to use the Pay What You Want Marketing Bundle. In this bundle, users pay a set amount of money per course. The first course is about Facebook. Mashable states that “only 4% of Facebook followers see a brand’s organic (non-paid) posts”, as a result in the lack of organic posts, this portion of the course teaches users how to spend their money on Facebook pages that will post content and ads for them. The second course mentions Google Ads, they mention that “A Google Ad strategy is key to any contemporary marketing program”. Users may also choose to buy the Snapchat guide. The article mentions that Generation Z is using snapchat more and more, making this app an excellent source of advertising. The article states that “[Generation Z] represents up to $143 billion in buying power”. In order to gain that money and win over teenagers, managers are recommended to buy this part of the bundle to learn more about Snapchat and how to use it effectively. The final course you may pay for is the video bundle. Videos are engaging for audiences and when used creatively, can create an impact on potential clients. Mashable concludes their article by emphasizing the importance of paying attention to data and keeping up with what’s popular and effective in business.

After reading this article, I found that there were key points that I could apply to this class and even my post secondary pathways. The first topic that stood out to me was on video. Filmmaking is something we spend quite a bit of time on in communications technology, we learn all about how to make engaging films and different styles that we may consider when filming. Apart from applying this article directly to the classroom, I spent time researching jobs in marketing and even considered it as a future career. This report outlines the importance of advertising and creating close connections with clients in order to win them over. It also mentions keeping up with the younger generations, as they are the ones that will be consuming products and looking for jobs. Overall, I feel as though I learned a little bit more about marketing in the media and look forward in discovering more opportunities in this field.
